Moissanite Basics

Moissanite Basics

Moissanite is a lab-created gemstone composed of silicon carbide. Originally discovered in a meteorite crater, natural moissanite is extraordinarily rare — so all moissanite used in jewelry today is grown in a controlled lab environment. It possesses a higher refractive index than diamond, meaning it actually produces more fire and brilliance.

Moissanite is a genuine gemstone in its own right — not a diamond simulant or 'fake' anything. It has its own distinct chemical composition, optical properties, and grading standards. We use it because it outperforms mined diamonds in brilliance, durability, and ethical impact, at a fraction of the cost.

Yes. Every CLEARCUTVVS moissanite is tester-approved. Moissanite conducts heat similarly to diamond, which is why it registers on standard thermal diamond testers. This is an inherent physical property of the stone — not a coating or treatment.

Moissanite rates 9.25 on the Mohs hardness scale (diamond is 10), making it durable enough for daily wear. Its refractive index (2.65–2.69) is higher than diamond's (2.42), so it disperses light into more spectral colors — producing the rainbow 'fire' it's known for. Visually, it's the closest stone to diamond that exists.

Never. Moissanite's fire and brilliance are permanent optical properties of the stone's cut and material — they cannot fade, cloud, or dull. The only thing that changes is surface residue from everyday wear, which a simple clean restores completely.

Completely. Because moissanite is lab-created, there is zero mining, zero environmental disruption, and zero connection to conflict gemstones. Every stone is traceable from creation to setting.

Maintenance & Care

Maintenance & Care

Soak the piece in warm water with a few drops of mild dish soap for 5–10 minutes, then gently brush around the setting and beneath the stone with a soft-bristled toothbrush. Rinse under warm water and pat dry with a lint-free cloth. Avoid harsh detergents and antibacterial soaps — they leave a film that mutes brilliance.

Wipe silver with a polishing cloth after every wear to remove skin oils, and store it in an airtight bag with a silica packet to prevent tarnish. For deeper cleaning, wash in warm soapy water with a soft cloth — never use abrasives, baking soda pastes, or scouring pads. Our full care guide lives on the Care page.

Tarnish is a natural chemical reaction between silver and sulfur compounds in the air. It's not damage — it's reversible. .925 silver (92.5% pure silver alloyed with copper for strength) tarnishes when exposed to air, moisture, and skin oils. Proper storage and periodic polishing keep it looking new indefinitely.

Yes. Moissanite is durable enough for everyday wear, and our settings are built to last. The only rule: remove pieces before swimming (chlorine damages silver), heavy workouts, or handling harsh chemicals like bleach and acetone.

For daily-wear pieces, a quick wipe after wear and a full clean every 1–2 weeks keeps them looking new. Occasion pieces need a refresh before and after each wear. A professional setting inspection is recommended once a year.

Shipping & Delivery

Shipping & Delivery

It depends on what you order. Available stock ships within 2–3 days. Custom builds — including iced-out G-Shocks and bespoke jewelry — take 19–21 days total from order to delivery, since each piece is hand-set to your specifications.

In-stock pieces are ready to ship and arrive within 2–3 days. Custom builds are made to order: we source the stones, hand-set them into your chosen piece, and quality-check before shipping — the full process takes 19–21 days. Custom work is worth the wait; nothing is mass-produced.

Yes. Once your order ships, you'll receive a tracking number via email so you can follow it every step of the way. For custom builds, we'll also send progress updates during the build process.

We ship domestically across the US. If you're located outside the US, message us through the Chat page before ordering and we'll confirm whether we can accommodate your location and any additional shipping costs.

Yes. Every CLEARCUTVVS order ships fully insured for the complete value of the package. Your piece is covered from the moment it leaves us until it reaches your hands.

Custom builds follow a fixed 19–21 day timeline because each stage — stone selection, hand-setting, finishing, and quality control — can't be rushed without compromising quality. If you need something fast, ask about our available stock, which ships in 2–3 days.

Orders & Custom Builds

Orders & Custom Builds

Start by messaging us through the Chat page with your vision — the piece type, stone preferences, and any reference images. We'll discuss options, confirm pricing, and begin the build. Custom G-Shocks and bespoke jewelry take 19–21 days from order to delivery.

In many cases, yes. Send us a photo of your watch through Chat and we'll let you know if it's a candidate for an iced-out custom build, along with pricing and timeline.

We accept major credit and debit cards. For custom builds, we'll confirm payment details with you directly through Chat before beginning the build.

Every CLEARCUTVVS piece is tester-approved — meaning it will register as a genuine stone on a standard thermal diamond tester. We stand behind every stone we set, and you're welcome to test any piece yourself upon arrival.

We operate primarily online to keep pricing direct-to-consumer. Browse the Gallery for photos of our work, and use Chat to ask any questions before ordering — we're happy to send additional photos or details of any piece you're considering.
